Dragon Boat Program Kickoff

December 9, 2009 - Orlando Rowing Club has been working with the Orlando Health Foundation and Women Playing for Time over the past few months on a new Orlando-area dragon boat program.

We are excited to announce the first dragon boats will go out on Lake Fairview - this Saturday, December 12th

The kick off will take place at 9am for a casual open house and introduction to the new program at the Orlando Rowing Club. Anyone interested in learning more about our new dragon boat program is encouraged to come out this Saturday.

At 10am Warriors on Water (a locally sponsored pink dragon boat team made up of cancer survivors) will head out on the lake. You will see just how a boat of 22 people operates.

We will host two very special guests; Christine Canevari, the Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Dragonboat Institute and Dennis Tarnopolsky, a trainer from Canada who also trains the award winning - Tampa Bay Bladerunners and IBM dragon boat teams. Christine and Dennis will take a second team of dragon boaters, ScORCh, out on the water at 11:30am.

The new ORC Dragon Boat Program will include several teams and a team training calendar which will be released in the next few weeks. We hope that you will stop by and be a part of our kick off for the Orlando Rowing Club Dragon boat program.

Thank you to all of the Orlando Rowing Club members who have supported this new water sports program for our club and a huge welcome to all of our new Paddlers!

Welcome Paddlers!

Team scORCh Sizzles in Tampa

September 19, 2009 - Congratulations to Team scORCh on their first Dragon Boat racing. After a quick land tutorial, Team scORCh ventured onto the water in a dragon boat at the Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Club. Most of us being first time paddlers we had no idea what to expect. We floundered a little at the start of the first 250 meter sprint race and got it together too far down the course, unfortunately. Our second race was much better and we won this heat, overall placing 4th out of 9 teams missing our chance to row in the 2000 m final race by 0.2 seconds to the USMC boat. In concert with Women Playing for T.I.M.E., Team scORCh is prepping to compete against paddlers from around the world in the 2nd Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival at Disney on October 17th. A Short Story - Rowing A 5K -A Metaphor

August 5, 2009 - Author Patrick Crowell, a former ORC member and local rowing legend, explores the emotional connection between the untimely loss of a neighbor’s child and rowing a 5K. Here’s an excerpt:

"At about the two-thousand meter mark, muscular soreness is increasing in my thighs as lactic acid begins to accumulate. It hurts and I long to quit. How nice it would be to stop the pain now. How nice to enjoy that lazy, easy row, like sleeping for an eternity. But then, what would I have done? Who would I be? What example would I have set?"
