How to Become a Paddler

No experience is necessary! If you are 14 years or older, and have never paddled with us, we invite you to join us for a free, complimentary practice.

Please note: If you are new to the sport and have never participated in dragon boating, we ask that you first join us for a Saturday practice at 9:30 am. Returning paddlers can participate in any of our scheduled club practices.

How to Sign Up
In order to schedule your first practice with us, please contact Doug at orlandodragonboat@gmail.com for more information and assistance on signing up. Also, if you are new to dragon boating and have a regular conflict with attending a Saturday practice first, special arrangements can be made.

Please note: Once you contact Doug, an email with a link will be sent to you from Doodle, the online sign-up application that we use. Doug will walk you through how to use it, if you are not familiar. Seats in the boat are limited to 20 people, and the only way to ensure your spot in the boat is to sign up online. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let Doug know.

A link to our current practice calendar and schedule is available at Dragon Boat Calendar. Please note: Practices labeled "DBC" are our open, club practices that are available to all paddlers.

Waivers
You will need to complete our waivers by downloading, printing, and filling out the ORC Dragon Boat Club Waivers. Please bring these waivers with you to your first practice.

Important Information

- Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your first practice. Practices are one hour (but sometimes go over a few minutes).

- What to wear? You’ll want to wear comfortable clothing (such as "work-out" clothes, t-shirt, shorts, etc.) and a hat and sunscreen, especially if you are susceptible to the sun. Water shoes or tennis shoes are recommended, as you may get splashed. Leave your valuables in your glove compartment or trunk.

- Important!! Please bring a bottle of water (you can bring your water on the boat with you).

- PFD’s and paddles are provided. The practice captain will help you find your correct paddle size.

If you are new to dragon boating, here is a helpful list of Common Dragon Boat Commands.

- If you enjoy your first practice, you can continue coming to future practices for $10 a practice, or we are currently offering a prorated membership for the rest of 2010 (approx. $12.50 - $25, depending upon when you sign up). Memberships provide you with the opportunity to attend as many club practices as you want, and are obviously a much better deal than paying per practice.

New membership pricing and details for 2011 will be released at the end of December 2010. For more information on memberships, please visit How to Become a Dragon Boat Club Member.
